Integrity USA

Local Realities

As The Episcopal Church has adopted more LGBT-friendly policies through its General Convention, our church has seen a growing variety of local practices. In recent years, one of Integrity USA's priorities has been making our national policy victories into local realities.

Some dioceses and parishes have come a long way, and seem fully including of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons. Others have trouble even saying those words. The ideas below express some of that variety, so you may see some suggestions that are not applicable to your situation.

Diocesan-level ideas for LGBT advocacy

Advocate for LGBT inclusion through diocesan policy

Get involved in the diocese

Recruit Believe Out Loud Episcopal Congregations

  • Hold a diocesan workshop for clergy and laity who want their church to consider becoming officially welcoming
  • Speak to clergy and/or vestries who might be open to their church becoming a BOL parish
  • Offer to be a coach or mentor for churches going through the process

Start a diocesan-level chapter of Integrity

  • Your chapter may serve the entire diocese, or it may cover a smaller, local collection of parishes.

Parish-level ideas for LGBT advocacy

Persuade the clergy and vestry to register as a Believe Out Loud Episcopal Congregation

  • Attend a BOL workshop in your area (or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) to learn how to engage your church in a meaningful, non-confrontation dialogue that leads to a more public welcome
  • Read about the BOL parish process here.

Get active

  • Whether you're LGBT yourself, or a supportive straight ally, your voice should be heard. Run for vestry, participate in classes and committees, and encourage other like-minded people to do the same.
  • Help to bring speakers, films, and classes to your church, to start discussions about inclusion

Donate the fee for your church to become a Proud Parish Partner

  • With a small annual donation, your church can be a corporate member of Integrity USA.
  • Your church receives a certificate to display on a bulletin board, and a logo for your website
  • The parish will hear from Integrity weekly with ideas and resources, and your clergy or another representative will be part of Integrity's Stakeholders' Council.
